Suvarnabhumi Airport (BKK) is massive. From the moment you step off the plane, you might walk over 1 kilometer just to reach immigration. This guide will help you navigate the chaos efficiently.

Don't be "that tourist"

The biggest bottleneck at BKK is the Arrival Card Kiosk area. If you have not filed your TDAC online, you will be stuck there for 30+ minutes while others walk straight to passport control.

1. Landing & The Long Walk

Most international flights land at Concourses C, D, E, F, or G. Follow the signs for "Immigration" or "Arrivals."

  • Walking Time: 10–20 minutes depending on your gate.
  • Transit Passengers: If you are connecting to Chiang Mai/Phuket/Samui on the same ticket, look for "Transfer to Domestic." Do not go to main immigration.

2. Immigration Control

As you approach the main hall, you will see a fork in the road.

The Lanes

  1. Thai Passport: Far right. Automated gates.
  2. Foreign Passport (Standard): The massive queue in the middle. Prepare for 30–60 minute waits during peak hours (late evening international arrivals).
  3. Priority / Fast Track: Far left. Only for Business/First Class, APEC Card holders, elderly (70+), pregnant women, or Thailand Elite Visa holders.

At the Counter:

  • Remove your hat and sunglasses.
  • Look at the camera for a photo and scan your fingerprints (all 4 fingers of each hand).
  • The officer will check your Passport and your TDAC Status (linked digitally to your passport number).

3. Baggage & Customs

After stamping out, check the monitors for your baggage carousel number (1–23).

Customs Checkpoint:

  • Green Lane (Nothing to Declare): Walk through here if you have standard personal items.
  • Red Lane (Goods to Declare): Use this if you have excess alcohol (>1L), tobacco (>200 cigarettes), or commercial goods.

Warning

Customs officers use X-ray scanners randomly on Green Lane passengers. Do not try to smuggle vapes or excess cigarettes.

4. ATM & SIM Cards

You are now in the Arrivals Hall (Floor 2).

  • ATMs: Available everywhere. They charge a 220 THB fee per withdrawal. Withdraw the maximum (20–30K THB) to save on fees.
  • Currency Exchange: The booths here have poor rates. Go down to the Basement (near the train station) for SuperRich booths with significantly better rates.

5. Getting to Bangkok City Center

You have three main options to get to your hotel.
