Entry Requirements

If you hold a passport from Japan, you must submit a Thailand Digital Arrival Card (TDAC) before entering the Kingdom of Thailand. The TDAC replaced the paper-based TM6 form and is now required for all international arrivals — regardless of your visa status or purpose of travel.

As a Japanese citizen, you are eligible for visa exempt (30 days) entry. Your passport must be valid for at least 6 months from your date of entry. The TDAC collects your personal details, travel information, and accommodation address in Thailand.

Common TDAC Mistakes by Japanese Travelers

  • Name order: Surname/Family name must come first on TDAC, matching passport
  • Japanese passport numbers are 2 letters + 7 digits
  • Romaji spelling must match passport exactly (e.g. Ōta vs Ota)

Auto Gates at Suvarnabhumi: Japan Is on the Announced List

Thailand's Immigration Bureau approved in principle on 17 August 2026 that Japan passports will be added to the automated arrival gates at Bangkok Suvarnabhumi Airport, with the change phased in ahead of the November-April high season. It is not fully live yet: until the signage at your terminal says otherwise, treat the manned counter as your default.

What has to be true before a gate will take you

  • At least two previous entries to Thailand. The gate matches a live face scan against biometrics already on file, so first-time visitors still clear immigration at a manned counter.
  • A renewed passport resets it. New passport, new biometric capture - the first arrival after a renewal goes back through the counter.
  • The arrival card is still mandatory. Auto gates do not replace the Thailand Digital Arrival Card. The gate reads your passport chip and looks up the TDAC filed under that passport number.
  • Any mismatch sends you to the manual queue. A name spelling, passport number or date of birth that does not match the filed TDAC will not clear the gate.

The fast lane is only as fast as the arrival card behind it: the details on your TDAC have to match the passport in your hand, character for character.

Japan is one of Thailand's oldest markets and its most habitual: Golden Week, Obon and the year-end holidays bring families and couples to Bangkok, Phuket and Chiang Mai, and Bangkok's Japanese business community is one of the largest outside Japan. ANA, JAL, Thai Airways, Peach and ZIPAIR fly Tokyo–Bangkok non-stop in about seven hours, with Osaka, Nagoya and Fukuoka also served. Japanese passport holders get 60 visa-free days. Visa-free days for Japanese passports: 30 days, tourism and short business visits. Flight time: about 7 hours non-stop from Japan. Where you land: Suvarnabhumi (BKK), Bangkok.

What Immigration Checks on Japanese Passports

  • Return ticket. Rarely questioned for Japanese package travellers; carry it anyway for open-jaw itineraries.
  • Passport validity. Six months from entry. Japanese passports come in five- and ten-year versions — holders of the five-year book are the ones who get caught.
  • First-night address. Required on the TDAC; write the hotel's English name and street, not the Japanese tour-company reference.
  • Medication. Some Japanese over-the-counter cold medicines contain pseudoephedrine, which is controlled in Thailand; carry only what you need, in original packaging.

Your Name on the TDAC

Japanese passports print the name in Hepburn romanisation with the family name first, and the MRZ follows: YAMADA<<TARO. On the TDAC the surname field is YAMADA and the given-names field TARO — do not swap to Western order, and do not add a macron or a double vowel (Ōta is OTA in the MRZ; Yuuki printed as YUKI stays YUKI). If your passport carries a bracketed alternate spelling, use the MRZ version. The passport number is two letters followed by seven digits.

Staying Longer Than 30 days

One 30-day extension costs 1,900 THB at any Immigration office. Long-stayers, retirees and remote workers should look at the Non-Immigrant O-A (50+) or the Destination Thailand Visa rather than chaining visa-exempt entries; the Royal Thai Embassy in Tokyo and the consulate-general in Osaka issue both.

Practical Notes for Japanese Travellers

  • Payments. Japanese credit cards work widely; JCB acceptance is good in Bangkok malls and department stores and patchy elsewhere, so carry a Visa or Mastercard as well. Every Thai ATM charges a flat 220 THB per withdrawal.
  • Time zone. Thailand is two hours behind Japan.
  • Japanese-speaking help. Bumrungrad and Bangkok Hospital have Japanese-language desks; the Sukhumvit Soi 33–39 area (Phrom Phong/Thonglor) is the centre of the Japanese community.
  • Help in Thailand. The Embassy of Japan is on Witthayu (Wireless) Road in Bangkok, with a consulate-general in Chiang Mai. Register on Tabireg before travelling.
