Entry Requirements
If you hold a passport from United States, you must submit a Thailand Digital Arrival Card (TDAC) before entering the Kingdom of Thailand. The TDAC replaced the paper-based TM6 form and is now required for all international arrivals — regardless of your visa status or purpose of travel.
As a American citizen, you are eligible for visa exempt (30 days) entry. Your passport must be valid for at least 6 months from your date of entry. The TDAC collects your personal details, travel information, and accommodation address in Thailand.

American passport holders can stay in Thailand for 30 days from 15 Sep 2026 (60 days if you enter by 14 Sep 2026) under the current visa exemption. Extensions are available at local Immigration offices.

- Thai address field requires a specific hotel/hostel name — 'Bangkok' alone is rejected

Auto Gates at Suvarnabhumi: United States Is Not on the Announced List
On 17 August 2026 Thailand approved in principle the addition of 31 more passports to the automated arrival gates at Bangkok Suvarnabhumi Airport, joining Thailand, Singapore and Hong Kong. United States is not among them, so arrival is at a manned immigration counter as before. The Thailand Digital Arrival Card remains mandatory either way and has to be filed before you travel.

What Immigration Checks on American Passports
- Onward ticket — checked by your airline, not just Thailand. US carriers and their Asian partners will refuse boarding on a one-way ticket without proof of onward travel within your permitted stay. Thai immigration asks less often, but the airline desk in LAX or JFK will. A cheap onward flight to anywhere satisfies both.
- Passport validity. Six months from entry. US passports are ten-year documents, so this catches people travelling on a passport from the previous decade — check the expiry before booking.
- Address of your first night. The single most common TDAC rejection for Americans is writing a city instead of a place: 'Bangkok' is refused; 'Hotel X, 123 Sukhumvit Road, Bangkok 10110' is accepted. Book the first night before you file.
- Medication. Adderall and other amphetamine-based ADHD medications are controlled in Thailand and require advance permission; codeine and some sleep aids are restricted. Carry prescriptions and check the FDA Thailand list before you fly.

Practical Notes for American Travellers
- Money. Use a card with no foreign-transaction fee; every Thai ATM adds a flat 220 THB per withdrawal on top, so take out larger amounts less often. Chip-and-PIN is standard, tap works in chains and malls, and tipping is not expected beyond rounding up.
- Phone. T-Mobile and Google Fi plans include basic data in Thailand; AT&T and Verizon charge daily passes. A Thai eSIM from AIS or dtac is cheaper for anything over a few days.
- Arrival day. With the time difference you land the following calendar day — make sure the arrival date on the TDAC is the local Thai date on your ticket, not the US departure date.
- Help in Thailand. The US Embassy is on Wireless Road in Bangkok with a consulate-general in Chiang Mai. Enrol in STEP before departure so the embassy can reach you.
