Entry Requirements
If you hold a passport from South Africa, you must submit a Thailand Digital Arrival Card (TDAC) before entering the Kingdom of Thailand. The TDAC replaced the paper-based TM6 form and is now required for all international arrivals — regardless of your visa status or purpose of travel.
As a South African citizen, you are eligible for visa exempt (30 days) entry. Your passport must be valid for at least 6 months from your date of entry. The TDAC collects your personal details, travel information, and accommodation address in Thailand.

South African passport holders can stay in Thailand for 30 days from 15 Sep 2026 (60 days if you enter by 14 Sep 2026) under the current visa exemption. Extensions are available at local Immigration offices.

Auto Gates at Suvarnabhumi: South Africa Is Not on the Announced List
On 17 August 2026 Thailand approved in principle the addition of 31 more passports to the automated arrival gates at Bangkok Suvarnabhumi Airport, joining Thailand, Singapore and Hong Kong. South Africa is not among them, so arrival is at a manned immigration counter as before. The Thailand Digital Arrival Card remains mandatory either way and has to be filed before you travel.

What Immigration Checks on South African Passports
- Yellow fever certificate. South Africa itself is not endemic, but Thailand requires the certificate from anyone arriving from, or transiting more than 12 hours through, an endemic country. A direct Gulf routing does not trigger it; a stop in Nairobi, Addis Ababa or most of West and Central Africa does. Check your routing and carry the yellow card if in doubt.
- Onward ticket. Asked of South Africans on one-way tickets by the airline at OR Tambo more often than by Thai immigration. A flight or bus out within your permitted stay is enough.
- Passport validity. Six months from entry; allow months for a Home Affairs renewal if yours is close.
- Funds. 10,000 THB per person (20,000 per family) may be requested; a bank-app balance is accepted.

Practical Notes for South African Travellers
- Money. South African Visa and Mastercard debit cards work in Thai ATMs; every withdrawal carries a flat 220 THB machine fee plus your bank's international charge, so take fewer, larger amounts. Enable international transactions on the app before you fly.
- Time zone. Thailand is five hours ahead of South Africa.
- Connections. Gulf layovers are 2–4 hours with bags checked through; the TDAC must be filed before you land in Thailand.
- Help in Thailand. The South African Embassy is in Bangkok's Sathorn district. The Royal Thai Embassy in Pretoria issues visas for stays beyond the exemption.
