Don Mueang Airport (DMK) is Bangkok's original airport and now serves as the budget airline hub for Thailand. If you are flying AirAsia, Nok Air, Thai Lion Air, or Scoot, you are landing here — not at Suvarnabhumi. DMK handles over 40 million passengers per year and has a reputation for slower immigration queues. This guide helps you get through quickly.

Airport Overview

Don Mueang has two terminals: Terminal 1 (international flights) and Terminal 2 (domestic). Most budget international carriers operate from Terminal 1. The airport is older and more compact than Suvarnabhumi, with fewer amenities but shorter walking distances. It is located 24 km north of central Bangkok, directly on a major highway.

Do Not Confuse the Two Bangkok Airports

Bangkok has two airports: Suvarnabhumi (BKK) and Don Mueang (DMK). They are 30 km apart. Check your booking carefully — showing up at the wrong airport is more common than you think. If connecting between the two, allow at least 2 hours for the transfer.

Immigration & TDAC

Immigration at Don Mueang can be slower than Suvarnabhumi, especially during peak hours when multiple budget flights land simultaneously (typically 22:00–02:00). Wait times of 45 minutes to 2 hours are common during these periods.

TDAC Requirement

All travelers must complete the Thailand Digital Arrival Card (TDAC) before arrival. Have your QR code ready on your phone before joining the immigration queue. Without it, you will be sent to a kiosk — and DMK's kiosks have limited capacity and unreliable Wi-Fi.

1

Have your QR code ready

Open your TDAC confirmation email before deplaning. DMK Wi-Fi can be slow — do not rely on it to load your email.

2

Follow signs to Immigration

International arrivals proceed to Terminal 1 immigration hall. The queue area is smaller than Suvarnabhumi with fewer counters.

3

Present passport + QR code

The officer scans your QR code, checks your passport, takes fingerprints and a photo. Processing takes 1–2 minutes per person.

4

Collect bags

Baggage carousels are immediately after immigration. Check the screens for your belt number.

Late-Night Arrivals

Many budget flights land at DMK between midnight and 2 AM, when buses and trains stop running. Your only options are metered taxi or Grab. The taxi queue can be very long at this hour. Book Grab in advance if possible — or wait 15–20 minutes for the queue to thin out.

Terminal Tips

Connecting to Suvarnabhumi

If you need to transfer to Suvarnabhumi Airport (for a connecting international flight on a full-service carrier), you have three options:

How long does immigration take at Don Mueang?
During off-peak hours (mornings, early afternoon), immigration takes 15–30 minutes. During the late-night budget flight rush (22:00–02:00), expect 45 minutes to 2 hours. Having your TDAC QR code ready saves significant time.
Is there a fast track at Don Mueang?
Don Mueang does not have the same Premium Lane service as Suvarnabhumi. E-gates are limited and not available for all passport types. Your best bet is filing your TDAC in advance and arriving with all documents ready.
Can I get a SIM card at Don Mueang?
Yes, AIS and TrueMove counters are in the arrivals hall. Tourist SIM packages start from 299 THB. The 7-Eleven in the terminal also sells them, often with better deals.
What airlines fly into Don Mueang?
DMK is primarily a budget airline hub. Major carriers include AirAsia (the largest operator), Nok Air, Thai Lion Air, Scoot, and some charter airlines. Full-service carriers (Thai Airways, Singapore Airlines, Emirates) use Suvarnabhumi instead.

Flying into Don Mueang?

DMK's Wi-Fi is unreliable and kiosks have long waits. Complete your TDAC before you fly and have the QR code saved on your phone.
