Frequently Asked Questions

Do I need a visa for Thailand?
It depends on your nationality. Citizens of 93 countries are visa-exempt and can enter for 30โ€“90 days without a visa. 31 additional countries qualify for Visa on Arrival (15 days). Check the tables above for your country.
Whatโ€™s the difference between visa-exempt and visa on arrival?
Visa-exempt means you donโ€™t need any visa at all โ€” just show your passport at immigration. Visa on Arrival (VOA) requires you to apply at the airport on landing, pay 2,000 THB in cash, and provide documents like a photo, return ticket, and proof of funds. VOA is limited to 15 days and cannot be extended.
Can I extend my stay in Thailand?
Yes, if you entered visa-exempt (60 days). Since November 2025, you can extend up to 2 times per calendar year: the first extension adds 30 days (1,900 THB), and the second adds 7 days. Tourist visa holders can extend once for 30 days. VOA holders cannot extend at all.
Do I still need to fill out the TDAC if Iโ€™m visa-exempt?
Yes. The Thailand Digital Arrival Card (TDAC) is mandatory for all visitors regardless of visa status. It replaced the old paper TM6 arrival/departure card in May 2025.
What happens if I overstay my visa?
Overstaying is taken seriously. Youโ€™ll be fined 500 THB per day (max 20,000 THB). Overstays exceeding 90 days result in re-entry bans: 1 year for 90+ days, 3 years for 1+ year, 5 years for 3+ years, and 10 years for 5+ years.
Can I do a visa run to extend my stay?
Thailand has cracked down on serial visa runs. Since November 2025, you can do a maximum of 2 visa runs per calendar year. Repeatedly entering and leaving to reset your visa exemption may result in entry denial. Consider the DTV or Tourist Visa for longer stays.
Which visa is best for digital nomads?
The Destination Thailand Visa (DTV) is specifically designed for remote workers. It offers 5 years of multiple entries with 180-day stays per entry. You need 500,000 THB in a bank account held for 90 days. If you donโ€™t qualify, the Tourist Visa (60 days + 30-day extension) is the next best option.
How much does the Thailand Elite visa cost?
The Thailand Privilege (Elite) visa ranges from 650,000 THB (Bronze, 5 years) to 5,000,000 THB (Reserve, 20 years). The Gold tier at 900,000 THB for 5 years is popular with digital nomads who want hassle-free long-term stays.
