Thailand is famously welcoming, but its customs laws can be confusing and surprisingly strict. Items that are legal in your home country — like e-cigarettes — can carry heavy fines here.
Before you pack...
Ensure your paperwork is in order. Customs officers may check your documents along with your bags. Have your Passport and TDAC QR Code ready upon arrival.
1. The "Vape" Ban (Strictly Illegal)
This is the most common way tourists get into trouble. Thailand has one of the strictest anti-vaping laws in the world.
DO NOT BRING VAPES
Importation, possession, and use of e-cigarettes, vapes, and e-liquids are ILLEGAL in Thailand.
The Consequences:
- Fine: Up to 30,000 THB ($900 USD) on the spot.
- Confiscation: Police routinely stop tourists in Bangkok and Phuket to check bags.
- Jail Time: Theoretically possible up to 10 years, though rare for simple possession.
Advice: Leave your vape at home. Do not try to sneak it through customs. It is not worth the risk.
2. Bringing a Drone
You can bring a drone into Thailand, but you cannot legally fly it until it is registered. The process is bureaucratic and time-consuming.
The Two Registrations Required
- NBTC (National Broadcasting and Telecommunications Commission): Registers the radio frequency. Can be done online or at an NBTC office. Cost: ~200 THB.
- CAAT (Civil Aviation Authority of Thailand): Registers the pilot. Must have drone insurance covering 1 million THB liability.
Timeline: NBTC takes a few days. CAAT can take months. If you are on a 2-week holiday, it is unlikely you will get the permit in time unless you start months before arrival.
3. Prescription Medication
Most standard medications are fine, but strict rules apply to narcotics (e.g., Codeine, Xanax, Adderall).
Rules for Carrying Medication
- Keep medication in original packaging with the label clearly visible.
- Carry a letter from your doctor stating why you need the medication.
- Do not bring more than a 30-day supply.
Note: If your medication falls under Category 2 Narcotics (e.g., Morphine, Fentanyl), you must obtain a permit from the Thai FDA at least 2 weeks before travel.
4. Cannabis: The 2026 Update
Thailand decriminalized cannabis in 2022, but the laws are tightening in 2025/2026 to focus on "Medical Use Only."
- Public Smoking: Illegal. Fines up to 25,000 THB for "public nuisance."
- Extracts: Extracts with THC > 0.2% are classified as illegal narcotics.
- Taking it Home: NEVER fly out of Thailand with cannabis. It is classified as severe drug trafficking in most other Asian countries (Singapore, Indonesia, etc.) and can carry the death penalty in transit hubs.
5. Vaccinations
Thailand does not require COVID-19 vaccination proof for entry. However, other rules apply.
Mandatory Vaccine: Yellow Fever
This ONLY applies if you are traveling from a Yellow Fever Risk Country (parts of Africa and South America). You must present an "International Certificate of Vaccination" at the Health Control counter before Immigration.
Travelers from the USA, UK, Europe, and Australia do not need this.
Recommended Vaccines (CDC)
- Hepatitis A & B
- Typhoid (via food/water)
- Tetanus (routine booster)
