Best eSIM and SIM Cards for Thailand 2025 – Prices, Coverage & Where to Buy at the Airport
03/12/2025Thailand welcomed over 35 million tourists in the first 11 months of 2025 alone, and the entry process has never been simpler — or stricter in certain ways. Whether you’re coming for two weeks of island-hopping, a month in Chiang Mai, or a full digital-nomad year, this is the most detailed, up-to-date guide you’ll find anywhere.
Everything below is current as of 3 December 2025.
1. Passport & Basic Entry Requirements (The Non-Negotiables)
These rules apply to every single visitor — no exceptions.
| Requirement | Details | Common Mistake to Avoid |
|---|---|---|
| Passport validity | Minimum 6 months from date of entry | Many airlines deny boarding if only 5 months 29 days left |
| Blank pages | At least 1 full blank page (some officers ask for 2) | Running out of pages = forced visit to your embassy |
| Onward or return ticket | Must leave Thailand within your allowed stay (air, bus, ferry all accepted) | One-way ticket + no proof = boarding denied |
| Proof of funds | Officially 20,000 THB (~580 USD) per person or 40,000 THB per family. Rarely asked at airports. | Land borders sometimes ask to see cash or bank app |
| Accommodation booking | First night’s hotel or address is now asked in the TDAC form — have it ready | “I’ll book later” attitude can cause 10–15 min questioning |
Pro tip: Screenshot your onward flight and hotel booking and save them in an offline folder. Immigration officers love seeing everything instantly on your phone.
2. Visa Rules 2025 – Who Gets What and For How Long
A. 60-Day Visa Exemption (Most Popular)
Citizens of 93 countries and territories now get 60 days visa-free (previously 30 days). This rule became permanent in July 2024 2024 and is still valid in December 2025.
Top countries included: United States, Canada, United Kingdom, all EU countries, Australia, New Zealand, Japan, South Korea, Singapore, Malaysia, Brazil, South Africa, Israel, Gulf countries (UAE, Qatar, Kuwait, etc.), Hong Kong, and many more.
Key restrictions introduced in 2025 to stop perpetual tourists:
- Maximum two visa-exempt entries by air per calendar year
- Maximum two entries by land/sea per calendar year
- Extensions limited: first +30 days easy, second extension only 7 days and often refused
Real-life example: If you flew in January and April 2025 (both 60 days + 30-day extensions), you cannot fly in again in December 2025 on visa exemption — you’ll be sent to get a proper tourist visa first.
B. Visa on Arrival (VOA)
Eligible for about 30 nationalities (India, China, Kazakhstan, Taiwan, etc.) → 15 days, non-extendable, 2,000 THB cash fee at the airport Fast-track lanes exist at BKK, HKT, CNX, and DMK.
C. Single-Entry Tourist Visa (SETV)
60 days + 30-day extension possible Apply online via thaievisa.go.th (3–7 days processing) Perfect for 70–90 day trips.
D. Multiple-Entry Tourist Visa (METV)
Rarely issued in 2025 — most embassies have stopped them.
E. Destination Thailand Visa (DTV) – The Digital Nomad & Remote Worker Dream
Launched July 2024, still going strong and being improved in 2025.
- 180 days per entry
- Multiple entries valid 5 years
- Additional 180-day extension possible each time
- For remote workers, Muay Thai students, Thai soft-power courses, medical treatment, or family of DTV holders Cost: 10,000 THB (about $290) at Thai embassies or online in some countries.
3. Health & Vaccination Requirements 2025 – What Is Actually Mandatory?
Short answer in 2025: almost nothing.
- No COVID vaccines, tests, or insurance required
- No Thailand Pass, no QR code for health (the old system is 100 % dead)
The only vaccine that can stop you at the border: Yellow Fever vaccination certificate → Required if you are arriving from or have transited more than 12 hours in any of these countries in the last 6 days: most of sub-Saharan Africa + parts of South America (Brazil, Colombia, Peru, Bolivia, etc.).
If you need it, get the shot at least 10 days before travel — the certificate is valid for life.
Strongly recommended vaccines (but not checked at immigration):
- Hepatitis A & Typhoid (street food protection)
- Hepatitis B (tattoos, medical, sex)
- Rabies pre-exposure (3 shots) if you plan to ride motorbikes or volunteer with animals or visit monkey temples daily
- Japanese Encephalitis if staying in rural northern Thailand for a month or more during rainy season
Mosquito repellent with 30–50 % DEET + long clothing at dawn/dusk is more important than any vaccine for dengue prevention.
4. TDAC – Thailand Digital Arrival Card (The New “Online TM6”)
The biggest change in 2025: the paper TM6 arrival/departure card was completely abolished on 1 May 2025.
Every single foreigner must now fill the Thailand Digital Arrival Card (TDAC).
| Detail | Information |
|---|---|
| When to do it | From 72 hours (3 days) before arrival up until you reach the immigration counter or up to 6 months in advance with TDAC.info |
| How long it takes | 3–8 minutes |
| What you need | Passport, flight details, address of first night in Thailand (hotel name + district is enough) |
| What you get | QR code sent by email and shown on screen — save both |
| Penalty for not having it | 2,000 THB fine + long questioning + possible entry refusal |
| Do Thai citizens need it? | No |
| Do transit passengers need it? | No, if you stay airside |
Pro tip: Do it as soon as you have your hotel booked — many people forget and end up doing it in the airport Wi-Fi right before immigration.
5. Airport Arrival Flow in 2025 (What Actually Happens When You Land)
- Plane lands → walk to immigration
- Open your TDAC QR code (or have it printed)
- Officer scans QR code → asks normal questions (“How long stay?”, “Where stay?” “What you do in Thailand?”)
- Fingerprints (both index fingers) + photo taken automatically
- Passport stamped → welcome to Thailand!
Average time at Suvarnabhumi or Phuket airport: 10–25 minutes even in peak season because of the digital system.
6. Overstay Rules & Penalties (They Got Tougher in 2025)
- 500 THB per day (max 20,000 THB)
- Over 90 days = possible ban (1–10 years depending on length)
- Voluntary surrender at airport = pay fine + usually no ban
- Caught inside country = detention + blacklist
Set a calendar reminder 5 days before your permitted stay ends.
7. Final Pre-Departure Checklist (Copy-Paste This)
- Passport valid 6+ months
- Onward ticket out of Thailand
- First hotel booking saved
- TDAC completed + QR code screenshot
- Yellow fever certificate (only if applicable)
- Travel insurance (medical + trip cancellation recommended)
- Cash or ATM card (Thai ATMs charge 220–300 THB fee)
- Downloaded Grab, Bolt, and inDrive apps for transport
- Offline Google Maps of Bangkok/Phuket/Chiang Mai
That’s really it.
Thailand in 2025 is easier to enter than almost any time in the last decade — as long as you have the TDAC and don’t abuse the visa-exemption rules.
Safe travels, enjoy the street food, respect the temples, and don’t ride elephants and you’ll have the trip of a lifetime.
See you on the beaches or in the mountains — sawasdee krub/ka!
