Phuket International Airport (HKT): Arrival Guide 2026

Your guide to arriving at Thailand's second-busiest airport — immigration, minibuses, taxis, and getting to your beach.

Phuket International Airport terminal

Phuket International Airport (HKT) is Thailand's second-busiest airport and the gateway to some of the country's most popular beach destinations. It's smaller and easier to navigate than Suvarnabhumi, but the transport situation to your resort can be confusing. This guide has you covered.

Airport Overview

Phuket Airport has a single international terminal (Terminal 1) that opened in 2016, replacing the old terminal which now handles domestic flights. The international terminal is modern and well-organized. It handles around 18 million passengers per year, with the majority arriving on international flights from Europe, Australia, Russia, and China.

Immigration

Immigration at Phuket is generally faster than Bangkok, with wait times averaging 15–30 minutes. During peak season (November–March), waits can be longer when multiple European flights arrive simultaneously. Have your TDAC QR code and passport ready.

Is Grab available at Phuket Airport?
Yes, Grab and Bolt both operate at Phuket Airport. However, local taxi operators sometimes make it difficult for ride-hail drivers to pick up. You may need to walk to the departures level or the designated ride-hail pickup point. Prices are generally cheaper than airport taxis.
What's the cheapest way to get to Patong from Phuket Airport?
The Smart Bus costs only 100 THB and runs from the airport to Patong via several beaches. It departs every 30 minutes from 06:00 to 21:00. The journey takes about 60–90 minutes with stops. The airport minibus (200 THB) is another budget option.
Can I rent a car at Phuket Airport?
Yes, major rental companies (Hertz, Budget, Thai Rent A Car) have counters in the arrivals hall. Prices start from 800 THB/day for a small car. An international driving permit is officially required, though many agencies accept your home country license. Note that Phuket roads can be challenging — hilly, winding, and with unpredictable motorbike traffic.
Are there ATMs at Phuket Airport?
Yes, multiple ATMs are available in the arrivals hall. All charge a 220 THB fee for international cards. For better exchange rates, use the SuperRich exchange counter in the arrivals hall rather than the ones in the baggage claim area.
